While we bake in Chicago, our lakefront community is jammed with cyclists, swimmers, runners, beach volleyball players, longboard riders, skateboard talent, sun bathers, lazy day strollers and all sorts of life organisms just living it up. Meanwhile, sunny days are turning into endless summer nights. And at Maria’s we got just the event for the times.

The musical broadcast for the evening? We’re calling it “eclectic beach.” Whether it’s chill downtempo wavy trip-hop, classic surf, Spanish reggae magic or a late night tech house snack, and so on, we’ll somehow make it all fit together nicely for you.

So go on, bring on that beachwear, wear a lei, look sexy and get ready to press a cold glass against the forehead as you relax after a day of taking in the rays, sitting in the office, or whatever it is you do to survive in this steely jungle we call home.  (Oh, by the way, we’ll also have some cool videos to watch too…enjoy!)

Wednesday: Diggin Dusties

Maria’s Package Goods & Community Bar, Strut Records & Dusty Groove
America presents:
DIGGIN’ DUSTIES: Sofrito – International Soundclash Record Release & Listening Party
Raw dancefloor rhythms from Africa, the Caribbean and South America
Featuring Global Groove Merchant Joe Bryl

For our Wednesday, July 25 installment of our “Diggin’ Dusties” residency, Maria’s Package Goods and Dusty Groove America is showcasing the latest Strut Records release titled “Sofrito – International Soundclash: Raw dancefloor rhythms from Africa, the Caribbean and South America”. Hosted by global groove merchant Joe Bryl, the evening will kick off at 8PM with a listening party of this highly anticipated compilation. There will be giveaways of this release made available through Strut Records. So, arrive early before they disappear!

Strut link up again with Sofrito, leading lights in the new generation of collectives celebrating heavy Tropical music. Fuelled by the unquenchable thirst of DJs Hugo Mendez and Frankie Francis to turn up new music and explore sounds from across the ages, Sofrito has built a unique reputation since it began life in the warehouses of East London in the mid 2000s.

Now, following the success and critical acclaim of their debut compilation in association with Strut, Sofrito: Tropical Discotheque, Hugo and Frankie bring the long-awaited follow-up, Sofrito: International Soundclash.

The new selection effortlessly mixes the old with the new, plucking dusty gems from Trinidad, Colombia, Dominica, Congo, Cameroun and beyond. Exclusives include the deep Pacifico sound of Grupo Canalon’s “La Zorra y El Perol” – a new project from Nidia Góngora, singer with Quantic’s Combo Barbaro – a previously unreleased track by UK/Kenyan sensations Owiny Sigoma Band, and a Tropical Treats edit of Haiti’s dynamite Les Difficiles de Petion-Ville.

Other highlights include an incendiary lesson in Soca groove from Lord Shorty, stunning up-to-the-minute carnival sounds from Guadeloupe’s Mas Ka Klé, all backed up by deep bassline Cadence, synthed-out Soukous and other Afro Latin encounters.

Over the last year Sofrito have brought their inimitable vibes to clubs across the world – sharing the stage with Haitian Ra Ra collectives in Paris, running all-night sessions in Bogota alongside Quantic, warehouse parties with the Owiny Sigoma Band in London and sweaty parties in illicit lofts in Brooklyn.

Their “Sofrito Super Singles” vinyl series continues to make waves on the underground, unleashing raw dancefloor edits and attracting the likes of Daphni (aka Dan Snaith), DrumTalk and Sweden’s Tropical Treats to contribute guest re-works.

For this release, visual maestro Lewis Heriz interprets Sofrito’s fresh perspective on the world with a specially designed cut-out globe on a pull-out poster to accompany the CD and Double LP.

The record release will be followed by our own international soundclash featuring the hottest global sounds available at Dusty Groove America (1120 N Ashland Ave, Chicago) including African, Brazilian, Caribbean, Latin, Reggae and other burning world beat rhythms.

The event is free. The Sofrito release can be purchased at Dusty
Groove (http://www.dustygroove.com/).

THIS AIN’T CHICAGO: The Sound Of Underground UK House & Acid 1987-1991

Featuring DJ Supreme Joe Bryl

Maria’s Package Goods, Strut Records and Global Soul Productions is proud to present a listening party for the highly anticipated release of “THIS AIN’T CHICAGO: The Sound of Underground UK House & Acid 1987-1991″ on Friday, July 20 at 8PM.

The all-new compilation “This Ain’t Chicago” places the spotlight on early house music and acid emerging from the UK during the mid to late ‘80′s. Compiled by respected DJ / producer Richard Sen (Padded Cell, Bronx Dogs), the album celebrates the heady era when UK producers were responding to the first wave of Chicago house and documents the underground clubs that first championed the music. As the early rave scene and acid house kicked in at London clubs like Shoom and Spectrum, deeper and darker house nights thrived like RIP at Clink
Street, Confusion and The Jungle and in warehouse parties around East London. Manchester too adopted house music at an early stage, most famously at The Hacienda’s Nude night.

As well as an in-depth look at the music and the accompanying scene through the DJs and producers that were there, This Ain’t Chicago investigates media and clubland’s attitude to the emerging sound during house music’s early days, as early resistance from London’srare groove and hip hop scene gave way to an explosion of dance music and rave culture. Musically, the album draws on both underground classics and lesser-known tracks including early outings by producer Julian Jonah, A Guy Called Gerald, Trevor Fung’s Playtime Toons, Eddie Richards and Ian B’s Rio Rhythm Band and Baby Ford. The compilation
also celebrates a host of excellent but short-lived UK DIY labels including Ruby Red from West Midlands, G-Force out of Essex, Rhythmbeat, Chill and Catt.

“This album features many personal favorites and the tracks were particularly inspirational to me as a DJ and clubber at the time,” reflects Richard Sen. With current productions drawing heavily on early house sounds and production techniques, this album brings to light many previously unsung classics from the UK underground, still sounding as vibrant and relevant as during the early days of house.

The listening party kicks off at 8PM, with giveaways available through Strut Records. The party will keep banging until 2AM, headed by DJ Supreme Joe Bryl, focusing on other underground club grooves including deep disco, Techno, Chicago house, Euro-disco, acid and electro.

There is no cover for the event.
